Pressure, Force and Area – Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths

Pressure, force and area are connected by a simple formula. Once the relationship is understood, the formula can be rearranged depending on which quantity needs to be found.

Pressure, Force and Area

The basic relationship is:

To find pressure:
P = F / A

To find force:
F = P × A

To find area:
A = F / P

What the Symbols Mean

P represents pressure.

F represents force.

A represents area.

Units

* Pressure is measured in pascals (Pa), where 1 Pa = 1 N/m².

* Force is measured in newtons (N).

* Area (A) is measured in square metres (m²).

Understanding the Formula

Pressure describes how much force acts over a particular area. This is why pressure is calculated by dividing force by area:

P = F / A

A larger force acting over the same area produces a greater pressure. If the same force is spread over a larger area, the pressure becomes smaller.

The units also show the meaning of the formula. Since force is measured in newtons and area is measured in square metres:

Pa = N/m²

Therefore, one pascal means one newton of force acting over one square metre.

Rearranging the Formula

Starting with:

P = F / A

Multiplying by area gives:

F = P × A

Dividing force by pressure gives:

A = F / P

These are not three separate formulas. They are three forms of the same relationship.
